Cancun Local Secrets: Do’s & Don’ts (Avoid Jailtime)

Cancun is a tourist paradise, but after living here since 2003, I’ve learned there’s a lot more to this city than just beaches and resorts.

In fact, there are some critical do’s and don’ts that can make or break your trip.

✅ Do: Visit Downtown Cancun

If you want to experience the real Cancun, you’ve got to go beyond the beaches and resorts. Downtown Cancun is where the local magic happens.

I recommend starting with Mercado 28, a local market full of handcrafted goods, colorful Mexican attire, and souvenirs.

It’s a bit touristy but still a fun place to shop and haggle for unique finds.

For a more authentic experience, check out Mercado 23. It’s where the locals shop, and you can find fresh produce, traditional Mexican snacks, and local crafts at better prices.

After a long day of exploring, stop by Parque Las Palapas. The food stalls here are a hidden gem, serving some of the best tacos, such as al pastor and churros, you’ll find in Cancun.

It’s a local favorite, especially in the evenings when the park comes alive with families, live music, and delicious smells filling the air.

📌 Anthony’s Tip: Go in the late afternoon or evening to catch the best food and atmosphere. It’s a great way to feel like a local and enjoy authentic Mexican street food!

❌ Don’t: Fall for Airport Scams

One of the first places you’re likely to encounter scams in Cancun is right at the airport. Whether it’s currency exchange, car rentals, or taxis, tourists can get overcharged in plenty of ways.

Avoid exchanging money at the airport; it’s a rip-off. Instead, head into downtown Cancun and find a Casa de Cambio (money exchange house) for a better rate.

When renting a car, beware of hidden fees and unnecessary insurance that the rental company may try to push on you.

Let’s also talk about taxis. The airport is notorious for overpriced cab rides. They’ll charge you crazy amounts just to get to your hotel.

Instead, use the ADO Bus inside the terminal or arrange a shuttle beforehand. It’s way cheaper and just as convenient.

✅ Do: Pack Essentials to Save Money

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from living in Cancun is to pack your essentials, especially everyday items like sunscreen and medications.

Tourist hotspots like the Hotel Zone are notorious for jacking up prices: think $30 for a sunscreen you could buy at home for a fraction of the cost

The same goes for things like Pepto-Bismol or ibuprofen; you don’t want to pay resort prices for something as simple as a headache.

Don’t forget that if you visit any of Cancun’s adventure parks or snorkeling, you’ll need biodegradable sunscreen to protect the coral reefs. It’s not just a good idea; it’s required at places like Xcaret or Isla Contoy.

📌 Anthony’s Tip: Pack a small travel kit with medications like allergy pills, itch relief cream, and insect repellent. These essentials will save you money and keep you ready for anything Cancun throws your way.

❌ Don’t: Drink the Tap Water

One of the most important things to remember in Cancun is NEVER to drink tap water.

The water here isn’t filtered like in other places, and it could contain bacteria or parasites that could easily ruin your vacation.

Even locals avoid drinking it, so it’s best to stick to bottled or purified water.

📌 Anthony’s Tip: I always bring a reusable insulated water bottle. Not only does it keep my water cool throughout the day, but it also helps reduce plastic waste. You can refill it with purified water at your hotel or use the bottled water in your room. Avoid ice in drinks if you’re unsure of the source, and stick to bottled water or purified water.

✅ Must-Do Cancun Adventures

Cancun isn’t just about lounging by the pool; it’s full of incredible adventures waiting to be explored.

Since living here, I’ve had the chance to experience most of the tours, and one that tops my list is the 2-in-1 Paradise Island Tour to Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres.

Isla Contoy is a true hidden gem, an untouched paradise with pristine beaches and clear blue waters. It’s a protected national park, so only 200 visitors are allowed daily, making the experience feel extra special. You’ll get a glimpse of Cancun’s natural beauty without the crowds.

Isla Mujeres, on the other hand, is rich and lively. You can relax on the beach, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, or wander around town exploring shops and restaurants.

📌 Anthony’s Tip: Book early since permits to Isla Contoy are limited, and choose a reputable tour operator. This tour gives you the best of both worlds: adventure and relaxation. Don’t miss it!

❌ Don’t: Venture Far from Tourist Zones at Night

Cancun is generally safe, but like anywhere, it’s best to stick to well-lit tourist zones after dark, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

The Hotel Zone and other tourist-friendly areas have regular police patrols and security, which makes them safer for evening adventures.

I always avoid wearing flashy jewelry or carrying expensive gear when walking at night.

If you’re thinking of live streaming or showing off your adventures on social media, it’s better to do it during the day or in crowded, safe areas.

Keep your valuables in the hotel safe and stay aware of your surroundings.

Plan your night outings in advance and always have a safe way to return to your hotel. Stick to the Hotel Zone and tourist hotspots for a worry-free night out.

✅ Do: Explore Cancun’s Adventure Parks

You can float through underground rivers, watch stunning Mayan performances, and even explore the park’s wildlife. It’s a perfect mix of nature and culture. If you’re a history lover or want to learn Mexico’s heritage, this is the place to go.

For adrenaline junkies, Xplor is the spot to be. Picture yourself zip-lining over the jungle or driving amphibious vehicles through caves; this park is for those excited to pump up their vacation.

And then there’s Xel-Há, a natural aquatic paradise where you can snorkel, tube down rivers, and see incredible marine life.

❌ Don’t: Sign Up for Timeshare Presentations

Timeshare presentations are everywhere in Cancun, and promoters often lure you in with promises of free tours or gifts.

It might sound tempting, but these “90-minute presentations” usually become high-pressure, all-day events that can cut your vacation time.

I’ve been through it, and it’s not worth it unless you’re genuinely interested in purchasing a timeshare.

The sales tactics can be intense, and they’ll try everything from emotional appeals to “today-only” deals to get you to sign up. Avoid it unless you’re ready to invest time and money.

Politely decline the offers and save your time for real adventures. There are better ways to spend your day than sitting through a sales pitch.

✅ Do: Learn Basic Spanish

Even though English is widely spoken in Cancun, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can make a difference.

Speaking even a little Spanish can lead to better interactions with locals and, surprisingly, better deals when shopping or dining out.

I’ve found that when I try to speak the language, locals are more friendly and honest with pricing.

It’s also a sign of respect. When visiting someone’s home country, trying to communicate in their language goes a long way.

Plus, it’s fun to learn! Here are a few key terms that will help you out:

  • Hola – Hello
  • Gracias – Thank you
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? – How much does this cost?
  • La cuenta, por favor – The bill, please
  • Muy rico – Very delicious

Use a simple translation app if you’re not confident in your Spanish. Locals appreciate the effort, and it can make your Cancun experience more authentic and enjoyable.

❌ Don’t: Let Your Credit Card Out of Sight

One common scam in tourist destinations like Cancun is when waitstaff or vendors take your credit card away from the table to process a payment.

This can lead to unauthorized charges or, worse, card cloning.

Whenever I’m out, I always ask for the payment terminal to be brought to me, whether in a restaurant or bar.

That way, I can see precisely what’s being charged and make sure the transaction is done in pesos to avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

Keep your credit card within sight at all times, and double-check the amount before completing any transactions.

✅ Do: Leave Tips for Service Staff

In Cancun, tipping is a big part of the culture, and it’s expected at restaurants, bars, and even resorts.

If you’re happy with the service, a 10-15% standard tip is appreciated. I’ve found that leaving a tip makes me feel good and enhances the service I receive in return.

It’s a small gesture that goes a long way, especially for the hardworking staff who rely on tips for their income.

If you’re staying at a resort, don’t forget to tip the housekeeping staff. Even a few pesos or dollars left in your room daily can result in extra attention to detail, like fresh towels and better service.

Trust me, it’s worth it.

📌 Anthony’s Tip: Keep some small bills or pesos handy for tipping throughout your stay. At a restaurant, for a tour guide, or in housekeeping, your generosity will not go unnoticed and will

❌ Don’t: Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must when visiting Cancun, especially if you plan on doing adventurous activities like ziplining, snorkeling, or ATV tours.

Accidents can happen, and hospital bills here can be unexpectedly high, especially for tourists.

I’ve heard stories of tourists facing enormous medical bills after getting injured during excursions, and it’s not something you want to deal with on vacation.

A good travel insurance plan covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.

When booking travel insurance, make sure it covers the activities you plan to do. This small investment can save you a lot of money and stress if something unexpected happens.
